Three Classes You Should Not Miss at Watauga

Joey Veno recommends ceramics as a class not to miss. Featured above is a clay sculpture he made.

When Pioneers get to the high school there are so many class options, but only four years. It’s overwhelming to have so many options with so little time. We interviewed a few seniors, who have had the most experience at Watauga, to learn which classes students should make sure they take before they graduate.

Gwendolyn Anderson

“I think everyone should take APUSH. Not only did I learn a lot about American history, but the class also greatly improved my writing, taught me how to study, and changed my perspective on many aspects of our history that we glorify daily.”

Joey Veno

“You should take ceramics because it is an awesome class. You get to learn all these new things about making stuff out of clay and the intricate process that goes into it. Not only is it educational and fun, it's also very calming to create things out of clay and to work with your hands. If you wouldn't consider yourself good at art, that's fine because you start from the beginning and everyone has their own style which is what makes your pieces unique. You should also take it because Mr. Brown is awesome. He is a really nice and funny person and is always willing to help his students. His teaching is super clear and his examples are easy to follow. He always jumps at the opportunity to help his student as much as possible. You should definitely take the class.”

Kimberly Mai

“I think every high schooler should take Intro to Theatre Arts. I took it my freshman year and it taught me so much. It was the start of my social career and I made so many unexpected friendships that are still ongoing to this day. Even if you are not an actor you learn to build up your confidence and communication skills through the arts. You can't gain an experience like that anywhere else.”

Overall, Watauga has classes to suit many different interests. Even if you don’t gravitate towards a class that doesn’t mean there aren't underlying benefits from taking it. Always try. At the least, you could learn some new skills or make more friends!
