The Watauga Women’s Varsity Golf Team is sending a player to regionals this year for the first time since the 2021 season. Sophomore Theresa Copenhaver, the only Watauga player who qualified for regionals, will compete on Monday, October 23, 2023.
This is Theresa’s second year playing golf. She views golf as not only a sport but a stress-reliever that allows her to relax and be with some of her closest friends. This season, she is training multiple times a week in order to progress her golf skills and further her golf career.
“My season has been going well and I have seen much improvement in myself and the others on the team,” said Copenhaver. “Most of the recent competitors and competitions have been good. There are some people who are difficult competitors, but I make it my goal to play my own game and not get discouraged if they beat me.”
Theresa’s coach, Tasha Adams, also views this golf season as outstanding.
“This year's season, I would say, has been very successful. Having a young, yet growing, team, I have seen a tremendous amount of growth happen,” said Adams. “Not just in the skills and ability of golf but also as a team too.”
Theresa brings not only her skills to the varsity team, but her positive mentality.
“Theresa brings energy, positivity, and heart,” said Adams. “She doesn't allow the bad shot to carry on to the next shot. Her love of the game has also grown tremendously. When she isn't at school, she is working on her game. Both of these have also spread to the others on the team. I have seen the team grow to reflect the attitude and work ethic that Theresa has.”
Throughout the season, the team has grown closer through practice and other events.
“The team (members) are all like family to me and they all mean so much to me. They encourage me and make me want to go out and golf with them every day,” said Copenhaver.
Overall, the closeness and encouragement of the Varsity Women’s Golf team, along with the support and guidance of their coach, Tasha, motivate Copenhaver to do her best as she competes at Regionals.
“They are all just such sweet people and I look up to each of them in a different way,” Copenhaver said.
