The STILL room is located on the 2200 hallway and is a room designed for silent work if kids are caught outside FLEX rooms without a hallpass.
The STILL room was enforced at Watauga High School on Tuesday, September 6th, after a large number of students were skipping flex last year. Watauga High School applied this method to encourage students to get where they are supposed to be during FLEX time. Watauga has teachers stationed in hallways and checking bathrooms to ensure no one will be skipping FLEX under this system.
The STILL Room is an acronym meaning Silent Task Individual Learning Lab. The room is meant to keep kids on task and away from skipping flex. Teachers will pull students that are seen walking in the halls after the bell without a reasonable excuse or without a hall pass.
¨We have assigned locations with people on every hall, checking bathrooms, checking for hall passes so we are making sure students have a hall pass while in the hallways during flex,¨ said Dr. Rachel Shepherd, assistant principal of Watauga High School.
The effectiveness of this system almost came as a surprise. The room doesn't have many occupants daily and has had trouble filling up.
¨Thus far it's been very effective. It definitely seems to have helped. This entire week I've only taken two or three students,” said Shepherd. ¨We had a room that was planned for a larger quantity of students and we didn't have enough students to fill it.¨
Watauga administration is keeping track of the numbers within the room and the names of students who have been in the room. This means they can see if the same students are getting assigned into the STILL room. Punishments for consistent students include lunch detention and assigned flex periods.
¨We actually are keeping track of numbers in Edficiency, and we will be able to see how many kids are assigned each day, and if we have kids who are frequently assigned to the STILL,” said Shepherd. ¨Students that are frequent flyers will have an increase in punishment.”
The STILL room has been an effective addition to Watauga High School. The room has done a lot for Watauga, keeping kids out of the hallways and in FLEX.
¨Right now we are not seeing a ton of kids who aren't following directions and doing what they are not supposed to do which is fantastic and speaks to the level and the character of the kids that we have in this building,” said Shepherd.
