Student Council Provides Details on Prom 2023: “A Night in the City!”

For Watauga High School, Prom 2023 is right around the corner. The Student Council has provided us with an amazing venue, a perfect theme and all around surprises.

“This year, our prom theme is 'A Night in the City', and we are so excited for you all to see what we are planning! A ton of consideration went into our theme, and many awesome ideas were circulated,” said Amber Hamby, elected Student Body President and Head Chairperson for prom planning. “Ultimately once we got confirmation on our venue, we knew 'A Night in the City' was our winner!”

Every year students wait to hear where the prom will be held. Traditionally, unlike Homecoming, Prom is held off WHS campus. The Prom venue this year is the Grandview Ballroom and is located near the Kidd Brewer stadium at Appalachian State University.

“There are so many windows and gorgeous views of campus. During the night time, many lights are visible from around campus, giving a big city feel, right here in Boone! The ballroom itself is very luxurious, and makes you feel like you are somewhere fancy,” said Hamby. “We fell in love with Grandview for so many reasons. The atmosphere is perfect, as well as the location is very centrally located to the whole county. You can't get more convenient than right in the middle of town!”

Although Homecoming this year excelled in its "wicked" decorations, Student Council has decided to keep the decorations for Prom minimal.

“The venue in itself is already very big and beautiful, and we thought too much decor might make it feel overdone,” said Hamby. “You can expect some golden lighting and a cityscape. The rest we will leave as a surprise!”

There might be one familiar thing about Prom this year, and that is the music. According to Hamby, they will be bringing back this year’s Homecoming DJ.

“We had so much positive feedback surrounding the music that we decided to book him for prom as well. Be ready for a fun and upbeat vibe, but with more of an intimate Prom feel,” said Hamby.

Students need to look over the informational email sent by Ms. Brittany Maggard regarding Prom. Students will find ticket sale dates and prices, dress code, venue location and parking information in this email.

“One reminder we want to give is to bring your ID! If the name on your ID does not match the name associated with your ticket number, you will not be admitted into the dance. Tickets will be sold starting the 17th of April,” said Hamby. “As far as rules go, normal school rules apply. As always, be respectful of our venue and anything inside! A reminder about the dress code, NO jeans will be allowed. Formal wear only.”

A reminder for students wanting to bring a non WHS guest, in the email sent by Ms. Maggard there is a guest approval Google form linked at the bottom to sign up your guest. Submissions will be accepted up until April 4, at 4 p.m.

“We are so excited to share everything we have been working on with you! And we have an extra special surprise planned, as a little memento of your evening,” said Hamby. “We won’t let the secret out yet, but everyone should be excited!”
