Students in the cast of Seussical The Musical rehearse after school to prepare for their April show.
The theatre program has announced that there will be a musical this year, and it will be Seussical The Musical. With mask restrictions, the theatre department will have to make changes on how they will approach the production of the musical.
Sarah Miller, one of the theatre teachers in charge of Seussical, shared the reason they chose to perform Seussical.
“Seussical the Musical is a combination of almost every book written by Dr. Seuss that focuses on the tale of Horton the Elephant,” said Miller. “It is a fantastic show about taking care of each other and helping each other through difficult times, which we think is a brilliant message to reinforce during a global pandemic.”
As with most school events, the theatre department must meet COVID-safe regulations, including following the mask mandate in place for indoor activities.
“One of the reasons Seussical was chosen was because it lends itself beautifully to the use of masks in costumes,” said Miller.
“Masks will be designed for each character and will include mini megaphones like the ones used in Ancient Greece to project the voice through the mask. We do have the capability to have individual mics for students and we will likely still do that, having ten to twelve who will have their own microphones and the masks will just be used to project even further,” Miller said.
The musical will take place from April 7th to the 9th in the auditorium at 7:00 pm.
Ms. Miller is excited about the use of masks in the musical, and the students feel it will be safe to continue the musical with masks.
“Mr. Walker and Ms. Miller are prioritizing the student’s safety and health over anything else,” said Zea Marty, junior theatre student. “In class, Ms. Miller takes good precautions to keep us safe so the musical should be no different.” Senior Alex Bar agreed by stating, “Yes, the correct precautions are going to be taken to enforce masks used for the performance.”
Rehearsals have been underway for several weeks and theatre students are back in familiar territory.
"In rehearsals, we usually do blocking or music rehearsals," said sophomore Hannah Rabinowitz.
Upcoming rehearsals will start to bring in tech. “We will later start bringing in tech but that will be closer to when we start the show.”
The show seems to be on a good path for success, with proper COVID-19 restrictions and strong chemistry between the cast.
“We have a great bond as a cast and I am very very excited, and I can’t wait for the first weekend in April!” adds Rabinowitz.
