The murmur and stir all slow down as the lights dim and curtains open to reveal the concert choir. On Tuesday and Thursday of the week of 12/4, the music department joined together to perform and bring the holiday spirit to Watauga. This included the choir, orchestra, band, jazz ensemble, and small groups.
I appreciated the different styles of music, from classical to country. It consisted of a little of everything. The lighting and seating required much organization throughout the concert and was executed with great fluidity. Though it was longer than most, there was an intermission in the middle for audience members to get up and it kept the concert more engaging. With respect to all the pieces put together, about 40, it was beautifully arranged.
My favorite large group piece had to be the last performance of “Do You Hear What I Hear.” It included all the members of the music department. The orchestra sat in front leading with the melody, the wind instruments corresponded along with them and the choir brought everything together with song. There were many parts, yet the balance between the sections allowed for every part to be heard. It demonstrated the immense amount of effort and talent to put on stage.
I listened to both concerts and found that Thursday had fewer technical issues and overall was more composed than Tuesday’s performance. Though both were a pleasure to attend, an event like this is a perfect way to get into the holiday season and support the arts at Watauga.
The small groups called attention to many different musical sections, such as the cellos, brass, and voices. This concert was such a memorable experience because it is the only concert of the year that includes the small group performances. Many audience members were pleasantly surprised by the musical talent from the jazz duo performance, featuring Stevie Helms, senior, and Alex Testori, junior. Alex on the saxophone and Stevie on the piano created a warm jazz sound that resonated throughout the auditorium as they performed, “I’ll Be Home For Christmas”.
I am amazed by the way the music department has grown and the musical talent that each of these young musicians has developed. Mr. Winbush, Mr. Selle, and Ms. Wooten have shown a great sense of dedication to this department. After listening to the Christmas concert I am excited to hear what is in store for us in future performances. In the meantime, I’ll be saving the date for the spring concert and I encourage you to do so as well.
