Reef Magic Comes to New Market

Inside Reef Magic at New Market

Reef Magic is one of the only major saltwater fish stores in Boone, North Carolina. 6 months ago they opened a new location in New Market. For the owner, Jacob Hudson, Reef Magic is a place to pursue hobbies and learn more about saltwater ecosystems.

“I used to work for the previous owner while I was here in college,” said Hudson.

“This was also my hobby for many years. I kept salt water fish tanks. It went from octopus to eels, everything in between, reefs, coral.”

When you really enjoy a hobby you want to thrive off of it, so that's exactly what Hudson did.

“About the time I was getting out of college, he was looking to sell the business,” said Hudson. “About a year after I was out of college I was working and doing some research for the college as a paid employee. I found out that I hated my field and I decided to try and bargain with this place and [the previous owner] ended up selling it to me back in 2020.”

Hudson and his team have a lot in store for the new location of Reef Magic at New Market.

¨We just moved into this location about 6 months ago,¨ said Hudson. ¨So there are a lot of things coming. We are going to get some sharks and rays. We have tons of selection here but we are always looking to approve a little bit more.¨

Reef Magic also has an online store where customers can order fish to pick up in the store: https://reefmagic.fish/.

“People can order fish and pick them up right in the store from our warehouse,” said Hudson

For newcomers to the saltwater fish community, Reef Magic is the place to go. For beginners, Hudson recommends starting with clownfish.

“Clownfish are great,” said Hudson. “They are usually your starter fish when you set up saltwater tanks. It will be the first fish you really put in there. Clownfish are like the best thing to start with, easy, great for beginners.”

If you’re looking for a reputable store to continue or start your saltwater journey, Reef Magic has you covered.

“It is a very fun hobby, it's great for education,” said Hudson. “An aquarium has a little bit of everything in it, chemistry, biology.”
