It's hard to believe we are almost done with the school year. Although things were very different this year, students and teachers have adjusted well. The 2x3 schedule has been a big change as has the recent return to 4 days a week, but many students have found this new experience to actually be quite nice. As more and more people are able to get vaccinated, the COVID cases have decreased and restrictions/precautions are becoming less stringent. What does this mean for our school? Sports are all finally back in session and students and families have permission to attend games. Although it is different to be playing football in the spring verses the fall, students are beyond relieved to be back to some sort of normalcy.
There have been some concerns regarding if all of this is safe and if COVID precautions are being taken, but our Watauga staff has ensured that students are masked, socially distancing and following precautions as much as possible whether they are in the sport or outside watching. Isabel Holt, a junior at Watauga states, “It feels great to be back dancing on the football field! We always look forward to football season and it feels almost normal. I have some of the best memories dancing at football games and I am so glad we could have some games this year. I definitely think that precautions are being taken to ensure everyone is safe as it is outside and everyone is wearing masks. I am glad that the games are in the spring as people are getting vaccinated as well.”
From the perspective of another Pacer, Ava Cutlip, sophomore, states, “Being a Pacer this year has been different because of COVID, but our coaches and leaders have made sure to give us a real season. With all the struggles this year, leadership within the team has done a great job at keeping us safe and socially distanced while we have a great time. I love the community of Pacers and dancing through this year with the team has only made us stronger!”
It’s a joy that everyone is able to be back on the field, including our Watauga football players, Pacers, and cheerleaders. Different from basketball season, more people are able to come watch the football games to have a great but safe time. There is hope in the air with school finishing up and more and more vaccines being distributed.
If you are eligible to get your vaccine and have not yet received one, please consider doing so to do your part in helping our community and the safety of others.
