Pioneer Spotlight Honors Student Character and Accomplishment

Each Pioneer Spotlight recipient receives a lazor cut keychain created at Watauga High School.

Pioneer Spotlight is a long-held Watauga High School tradition. The program recognizes teacher-nominated students for their exceptional qualities.

This year, Pioneer Spotlight was held on Tuesday, April 18. Mr. Wallace, a social studies teacher at WHS and organizer for Pioneer Spotlight, explains its significance in Watauga High School.

“Due to COVID, we could not have the in-person celebration for the past 3 years. However, this year it is back. Pioneer Spotlight is a tradition at WHS that dates back to the old high school in 2009. Tamara Stamey was at the front of creating this program and it was one of her favorites,” said Wallace. “Its design allows faculty/staff members to recognize one student that has stood out to them and demonstrated the character we look for in a Pioneer Student.”

The program is managed by the PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention and Support) Team. The PBIS Team also designed the posters in the halls at WHS that say "What is Right, How does it Affect me or Others, Service above Self”.

“That message was designed at the same time as the Pioneer Spotlight program, 14 years ago,” said Wallace. “We want our students to do the right thing even when it is hard, consider their actions, and serve our community.”

The Pioneer Spotlight program doesn’t strictly highlight students who excel academically. Students are also chosen for their outstanding character and accomplishments.

“While many students are selected for different reasons, these students made an impression on an adult in the building and we want them to know we see them and celebrate them. This semester, 63 students were recognized in Pioneer Spotlight,” said Wallace. “Each faculty/staff member at WHS are permitted to select one student they would like to recognize. Many select a student each in the Fall and Spring semesters.”

Senior Anna Dishman was nominated for the program this year.

“I was surprised, but also honored. The teacher that sponsored me was Jean Ross,” said Dishman. “I was honored that she thinks so highly of me.”

During the program, students are recognized for their accomplishments, receive a certificate of appreciation, and are given a wooden key chain. A reception is held after the program for students, parents, teachers and staff.
