The Watauga Women’s Varsity volleyball team has recently been recognized with a team locker room.
The Watauga Women’s Volleyball program has been successful in recent years according to statistics and standings throughout the seasons. The team works hard in practices to prepare for challenging games, but they lacked a space to come together as a team.
Each year, Kim Pryor, the third-year returning Varsity coach, has attempted to gain a personal space for the team.
“When I first started back three years ago, I asked Coach Kerley if we could have a team room and he looked at the spaces in the high school and felt like there wasn’t space for it, '' said Pryor. “So the next year I suggested the locker room next to the auxiliary gym and he said they needed that locker room for away basketball teams.”
After 3 years of trying, Pryor was successful.
“This year I said, what if we had the team room and they were able to use the space or they use the downstairs lockers instead?” said Pryor. “Kerley said what if you shared a room with basketball? I asked the basketball coach and she said they used the space during the off-season so I went back to him and said, can we just make it work because I think we can?”
Pryor contacted Jeff Trexler, the maintenance director at the county office to pursue the team room and was immediately given a yes.
Senior Camryn Norris was a big factor in helping this dream come alive. Norris kept the secret from her fellow teammates in order to keep the big surprise alive.
“I knew that everyone would be so excited and that this would be a place to hang out and get to know each other,” said Norris. “I watched it happen and watched as it progressed and as it got more and more finished it just made me more excited to share it with the group.”
Norris’s dad was a contributor to this process as he helped to build the wooden lockers with a “W” in the center.
The volleyball team is excited for the space. Senior Captain Caroline Farthing thinks it will make the season even better.
“I think this was a very special addition for them to give to us because it gives us a space where we can put our stuff and gather and all do our hair together. Instead of using a public space it's like our own space,” said Farthing. “It makes the season even more special.”
After years of trying, the volleyball program has earned this team room and worked for a space to call their own. While using this space, Watauga Volleyball can continue to shine and represent Watauga High School. This addition is nothing short of deserved.
