Well-known country artist Morgan Wallen recently used a racial slur. On February 3, Country singer Morgan Wallen was walking out of a house party in Nashville, Tennessee yelling and saying profanity and racial slurs. Wallen has been indefinitely suspended from his label and his music is being suspended by radio and streaming services.
Wallen is one of the most popular young country artists. His most recently dropped album, "Dangerous: The Double Album," has been on top charts for the past four weeks and has set several streaming records. Wallen has scored top hits thanks to his songs “7 Summers” and ``Wasted on You.” Over the past few weeks there have been many opinions about him on all social media. We asked a few of our fellow Watauga Pioneers about their opinion on this whole situation.
“In my opinion people need to stop being so sensitive to every little thing and I’ve always been taught forgive and forget. He apologized. Let it go,” said Sam Brandon, a Junior.
“I think that Morgan Wallen should be forgiven for what he did. Other big celebrities can say anything and be forgiven, but when it’s a male country singer they decide to cancel him. I think it’s unfair,” say Chloe Wilburn, also a Junior.
Wallen has apologized for his accident. In an apology video Morgan posted on February 10, he stated, “ My words matter. My work can truly hurt a person and at my core that's not what I'm okay with. This week I heard firsthand some personal stories from black people that honestly shook me and I know what I'm going through this week doesn't even compare to some of the trials I heard about from them. I came away from those discussions with a deep appreciation for them and a clearer understanding of the weight of my words.”
But this is not the first time something like this has happened to him. Wallen is well-known for going out on the town, going to bars, performing little side shows and going to parties. So on top of his racial slur, Wallen has not been following the guidelines to protect himself and others from COVID. Wallen will not be eligible for winning the AMC’S Award this year.
Even though most radio stations and streaming services are pulling Wallen's music, his songs are still on the top charts lists top charts list.
