Masked Smiles
They say the eyes are the windows to the soul
I never understood until I had no other options
But to interpret the eyes of everyone I came across
The lifting, narrowing, and scrunching of the eyebrows,
Half-closed, open-wide, or narrowed lids,
Sometimes I could even see laughter dancing in the irises.
This is the skill that Covid taught so well,
The one I’d heard of but never understood
But, of course, even as I learned to interpret,
So did the people learn to hide.
Use the mask as a shield, hiding their real emotions.
They pulled curtains over their windows, remaining still and silent
While what was under the mask could do what it wanted
As long as it didn’t give anything away
No matter, I thought
For the smiles of those who dared to show them
Despite these hard times we live in
Were enough to brighten the day of any and all who meet them
So I guess what I’m saying is;
This Christmas season, dare to SMILE
