This year the school musical is “Mamma Mia”. So much work and time has been put into this production by amazing and dedicated students and teachers. While every play put on by the Watauga Theater Department exceeds expectations, the audience is anticipating this fan favorite to be phenomenal.
Senior Molly Smith will be playing the role of Donna Sheridan this year. The audition process for the play was time consuming and actors had to be dedicated if they would like to participate.
“The audition process this year looked a lot different than the WHS musical auditions in years past, but I honestly prefer the new way,” said Smith. “Previously singing auditions were held separately for people seeking male roles and people seeking to play female roles, but this year they were all done together!”
Unlike last year, students didn’t audition for specific roles in the play.
“There was no auditioning for a specific part,” said junior Raffaell Vazquez, who plays Sam Carmichael. “The directors chose parts based on the audition results.”

Even though the musical will take place at the end of March, this whole process takes place for months in advance.
“Auditions for Mamma Mia were way back in the fall," said Smith. "Prior to auditions, there were weekly flex sessions held to help students auditioning become more comfortable with the show!”
Extensive thought and planning is put into the musical each year and everyone involved puts a tremendous amount of work into their role.
“I have Mamma Mia related flex sessions Tuesday-Friday and cast mates and I often meet before or in between rehearsals to get some extra practice in,” said Smith.
“Mamma Mia” is a well-known musical and the theater department will do a great job performing this production.
