Maddox Greene, sophomore, is the starting QB for Watauga.
Maddox Greene, a sophomore at Watauga High School, defies the laws of nature with his incredible athletic profile. Greene is a multisport athlete, playing football, baseball, and basketball for Watauga, as well as playing travel baseball for Canes Baseball.
Greene plays middle infielder and outfielder for Canes Baseball, a travel team that strives to help players get to a collegiate level and get seen by both college and professional scouts. The team has a more independent approach in which they practice on their own and then play games together.
“It's all over NC, SC, GA, VA. We travel all over the place. We went all the way to Florida this year,” said Greene. “I don't enjoy the car rides to the games, besides that I like it all.”
Long travel distances aside, there is much to appreciate about taking his athletic ability on the road.
“[My favorite part is] probably meeting new people and just being able to talk with people about something, especially with travel,” said Greene. “You go all over the place and meet people from all over the country.”
Even though he is on an elite baseball team, Greene still manages to play three sports for Watauga. His positions include quarterback and cornerback for Varsity Football, shortstop for Varsity Baseball, and point guard for men's basketball.
Being the quarterback for Varsity Football as only a sophomore is no easy feat. Though it brings on a bit of pressure, Greene knows how to keep it level headed.
“You can feel the pressure sometimes. I just trust myself and my team,” he said. “I get nervous before the games, but after the first snap I'm good.”
One of his most memorable moments where he demonstrated his impressive athleticism and coolness under pressure was during last year's Homecoming game against South Caldwell.
“It was my first start,” Greene said. “It was nerve-racking, but we ended up winning by a good amount.”
With such a qualifying athletic resume, Greene hopes to continue his sports at a collegiate level.
“I hope to play sports in college, baseball, or football, not basketball,” he said. For the academic side of college, Greene is interested in something coaching or sports related as of now. This goes hand in hand with his favorite class at the high school -- sports marketing with Ms. Ogle.
With his schedule filled to the brim with sports and school, it's understandable that Greene just likes to relax when he can.
“I hang out with my friends mostly or just go home and sleep because I get tired,” he said.
Greene is not only a talented athlete but also an amazing teammate. He aims to motivate his teammates to be the best they can.
“He’s a very good player. He is good to have around to push you to be better,” said senior Tristan Salinas, who plays Varsity Baseball with him for Watauga.
Greene doesn't give all his credit for being a good athlete and teammate to himself. His dad has played a major part in his mentality and career.
“As long as I can remember, my dad always had me playing sports,” Greene said. “My dad is one of my role models because he taught me how to do everything I do.”
