Local food pantries, such as Pioneer Pantry, provide food assistance to community members in need.
Watauga High School offers a multitude of clubs for all students with differing interests, including Key Club. Key Club focuses on providing volunteer help to our community where service is needed. For example, club members have worked this year to help out with local elementary school fall festivals as well as the Red Cross blood drive. This fall, Watauga’s Key Club has teamed up with Pioneer Pantry to fill pantries across our community.
WHS Senior Piper Saunders, President of Key Club, has worked hard with Key Club members to plan a food drive to help stock the Pioneer Pantry.
“The Pioneer Pantry is a food pantry that Watauga High School provides food for Watauga families, students, and staff members,” said Saunders. “They have canned goods, produce, meat, dairy and more.”
In order to fill the Pioneer Pantry and help Watauga families, Key Club asks members as well as all students to contribute to the food drive. Donations will help community members in need of food assistance make it through the fall and winter seasons.
“Key Club works in the community to provide service when needed,” Saunders said. “Key Club is collecting food donations to give to Pioneer Pantry to ensure that the pantry is stocked during the holiday.”
Key Club is currently in need of a wide variety of grocery items to provide for the Pioneer Pantry. Items from ketchup to cake icing are accepted as donations from all students.
“The Pioneer Pantry is currently in need of these items: ketchup, mayo, mustard, ranch, spices, diced tomatoes, cream of chicken soup, chicken and vegetable broth, sugar, oil, vinegar, cereal, cake mix, and cake icing,” Saunders said. “All students have to do to participate in the food drive is bring their items to Mrs. Stumb’s room (3108) and officers will take care of the rest!”
Key Club has put on this food drive to help combat food insecurity in homes throughout our community. All donations to the Pioneer Pantry during the food drive will contribute to helping families and students in need across Watauga county.
