Senior Dustin Hicks recently took on an internship with the Watauga County Sheriff’s Department. He’s been interested in law enforcement for a long time, and now he finally gets to pursue it.
“I got my internship through Toby Regan at the sheriff's department,” Hicks said. “I heard about it through Ms. Smith and she gave me everything I needed to gain the opportunity for an internship.”
During internship hours, Hicks covers many duties, from chores to learning the basics of police work.
“For my internship, I helped print papers, clean cop cars, and ride along with Preston Russel,” he said. “I also learn the basic process that local law officials go through.”
Hicks isn’t just doing this for fun. He would like to pursue a career in law enforcement, specifically in the investigative field.
“My goal for my career is to become an investigator on a [State Bureau of Investigation], FBI, Secret Service, or private level,” Hicks said. “I would like to also become a Sheriff after I retire from my investigative career.”
Hicks also works at Mast General Store for part of his time. Even though police work often occupies his mind, Hicks does like to have some time to relax.
“In my free time, I work on vehicles with my grandpa, work at Mast General, and spend quality time with friends and family,” he said. “A passion of mine is definitely fishing and being in the wilderness and enjoying the environment.”
