The Spark Editorial Board and Staff Writers: Charli Johnson, Lucy Walker, Sophia Bateman, Zoe Lee, and Nathan Bishop: Editor in Chief
Hey Watauga Students! We are The Powderhorn’s newest branch, called The Spark. The Spark was a literary journal that used to run at Watauga. This publication covered and displayed the Visual and Performing Arts Departments in the school. We are excited to tell you that we are bringing this literary journal back and we have big plans. We are excited to showcase the talents of all the WHS students.
Sometimes a student's artistic achievements aren’t widely recognized by the school, and we want to change that. WHS has had true prodigies perform in our orchestra and many students have never even been to a concert. While that’s just one example, there are a plethora of students creating and performing art who deserve recognition in this school. Our staff is composed of people who care about the arts and who have the drive and passion to make sure artists and their works are recognized.
“Since attending Watauga, I have had a long-standing passion for the Arts department,” says Zoe Lee, junior and staff member at The Spark. “I sense a need and a desire to introduce the student body to the creativity and liveliness I observe in the Watauga theater, music, and visual arts groups on a daily basis. I'm eager to demonstrate the value of creativity in a high school student's daily activities. As our journalism staff expands, we aim to once more provide the literary magazine the attention it deserves."
Our goal in the Spark is to inspire in students a longstanding pride and confidence in their work. We believe it is important for Art to be seen, interpreted, and celebrated by everyone.
“I would like the students here to be aware of the talented people who work so hard to pursue their passions, and their amazing achievements,” said Charli Johnson, a junior staff member of the Spark.
The Spark is a work in progress, and we want to build a structure that will continue for future students to use.
“I can’t wait to get The Spark up and running and create a new outlet for the arts to truly shine,” says Lucy Walker, senior staff member of the Spark and the yearbook. “I am super excited to get to work on The Spark this year. Being able to share the work of Watauga art students would be so impactful, and would shed light on the arts department! I also have never done journalism before and I’m excited to branch out and see how this department works.”
We hope to give more recognition to the students at Watauga who are part of the arts community. We want the arts community and the school community to become more interconnected.
“As a member of the arts community here at Watauga, I am super excited to explore the arts and share their stories, artwork, and writing to the rest of Watauga,” says senior staff member Sophia Bateman. “Our journalism department has made so much progress in the past few years, and I think it's finally time to jumpstart the literary magazine again. Our goals this year are to get The Spark off the ground, and attempt to showcase student’s creativity in new ways!”
One of the many ways we plan to showcase the creativity of our students is with our upcoming Fall Art exhibition. As the plan develops we will release more information on that.
