Indoor Track at Watauga High School has recently ended on a good note. Many athletes hit different milestones throughout the season and have many different highlights to share about their experiences throughout the season. While the team had a great season, they experienced a big change. The team gained a new head coach, Michael Neff.
Olivia Burroughs is a Watauga High School junior who has participated in track for two years. Burroughs competes in the shot put, long jump, and pole vault for the team.
“I think the team had a great season overall. I think the success of the season showed the strength of the program,” said Burroughs.
Roman Sibaja is also on the indoor track team and is in his second year. He participates in long-distance running.
“I think that the team had a really good season. Many athletes saw their times improving,” said Sibaja.
While the team had a good season they also experienced new sportsmanship with the new head coach.
“The transition to a new head coach was a change, but the team and coaches worked well together," said Burroughs. "I think the success of the season showed the strength of the program."
The team experienced some obstacles along the way that they were able to overcome. For instance, the size of the team was smaller this season.
“I think that having a smaller indoor distance team was an issue this season. If we had more distance runners, we would have been able to put more runners in each event and score more," said Sibaja. "To overcome this, runners ran multiple events."
Despite changes in leadership and smaller membership, the team was able to get a win at the Millenium Charter invite. Further, Burroughs will participate in the state competition on February 11th.
“My highlight was probably clearing the bar that qualified me for the state meet," said Burroughs. "I was happy that I would be getting the opportunity to jump at a big meet with some of my friends from other schools."
Now that the indoor track season has ended, the excitement for next season and the outdoor track is beginning.
“This is my second year running indoor track. I am really looking forward to running for Watuaga next year,” said Sibaja.
