Many students drive their own vehicles during their daily commute to school and work. For some students, this drive comes with risks. A multitude of students at Watauga High have been affected by car accidents in recent times.
The effects of a car accident on a student’s life can sometimes be traumatic and have a huge impact on their school life. Thankfully, no severe or traumatic accidents involving students at Watauga High School have occurred this school year as of October 2022.
Junior Ayden Johnson shares how he was impacted by his departure from school when his vehicle was hit by another student in the car line at Watauga High.
“The first time I got hit, it was the first day I had my license and I got hit in the car line leaving school. I was coming to a stop when I was rear-ended,” Johnson said. “We ended up calling the cops to get a police report to file with insurance and ended up having to get a new bumper.”
Johnson shared how this accident didn’t really have a meaningful effect on his life in or out of school.
“The only effect is the hassle of getting the car to the auto shop and the time it takes to get repairs,” stated Johnson.
Doriannah Whitehead, junior, was also involved in an accident on her way home from school. She stated how as a result of the accident she has learned to be more cautious when leaving school in heavy traffic.
“My car wreck was a four car wreck and I was on my way home from school. This wreck was the first wreck that I’ve ever been in,” she said. “I’ve only had my license for four months so it was kind of scary. I’ve definitely been working on my driving and being extra cautious when there is traffic.”
The wreck also impacted both her social and school life by causing rumors and stress.
“This wreck impacted my school life by causing unnecessary drama and rumors. After my wreck, all I heard for two weeks is things about it,” said Whitehead. “It just added more stress and overwhelmed me.”
Caroline Wood, junior, also shares her experience with a minor incident involving her vehicle and another student in the school parking lot. Wood was parked in the school parking lot when another vehicle backed into her car.
“I was in an accident last school year when the car in front of me backed into my car. The people were super nice about it and explained they didn't see me behind them and were super sorry,” Wood said. “We got out and looked to see if there was any bad damage and luckily they had just cracked a little bit of the front of the car. I was headed to school and had been parked in my parking spot.”
Wood stated how her experience has encouraged her to be more aware of her surroundings when operating her car or being around other vehicles.
“My initial emotions afterward were just shock and confusion. The actions I have taken after this is I have become more aware of the cars around me so I can try and get their attention before an accident happens,” said Wood. “This accident hasn't affected my student life in any way because the damage was all minor and no grudges were held.”
