While at Watauga High School, students are always looking forward to some of the key points, such as graduation. Over the years the standards have changed and shifted from the ideal graduation. Last year was the biggest change that has affected the Seniors of 2020, where students received diplomas and recognition through a drive through ceremony.
This year, the ceremony will shift again, going slightly back to normal. Graduation will take place on the football field, weather permitting. Hoping for nice weather, the guests will sit in the stands with the graduates on the field. The proposed date is Friday, May 28th with a rain date of Saturday May, 29th.
Watauga students are grateful that this year it will not be a drive-by. However, seniors will be able to invite 4 guests of their choice. There may be a hard time deciding who will be coming if a student has a large family.
Senior Mattie Smith also has a brother who is graduating this year. This situation is difficult because they should get 8 tickets, but are only given 4.
Smith states, “There are 5 people in my family so with my tickets it makes up my parents and my younger brother but there are still so many important people in my life that we want there. It's hard to think about which grandparent can come or which aunt or uncle. We shouldn't have to pick and choose with something like this. With graduation being such a big milestone in life, it's hard to have the people we love watch through a screen once again, especially if regulations are changing to where we could technically have our family there.”
Afterward students could go home and have a gathering with close family and friends that may have not been able to attend the graduation. This is a great opportunity for seniors to visit and have fun before their adult career begins.
During the ceremony, faculty and staff will be in attendance. There will also be student speeches during the graduation ceremony. Different students will talk about their experiences throughout high school.
The tradition of walk throughs that has taken place for years past will occur again this year. Students will go by their old elementary school and get to take pictures and get to relive some of those moments for the last time.
We are so thankful for this opportunity throughout everything that has been going on the past two years. The Seniors here at Watauga are going to go far in life and succeed. Graduation is such a great experience that every high school student is excited to experience.
