The Super Bowl Sunday was a great night with the Buccaneers and Chiefs. Besides the well-played game there was a commercial aired on the Late Night Show with Stephen Colbert. Colbert’s show highlighted small local businesses who are struggling throughout the pandemic. These businesses, such as Foggy Pine Books, haven’t been doing too well and almost have gone out of business.
After Colbert highlighted the small bookstore on his show, business has been booming right downtown. Pre-pandemic, the store had a welcoming and cozy environment. The store had grown from just a small building into a larger space, with a wide variety of books available. However, since the store had to close its doors to in person appointments, business has dropped significantly.
Foggy Pine Books is one of the only book stores in Boone, besides Appalachian Bookstore. The fact that the Late Night Show chose a small business in the small town of Boone is just astonishing. There are so many small businesses throughout the country that are struggling. These are the businesses that need our help and attention, not the big well known businesses.
Larger businesses that rely on online sales, such as Amazon or Wal-Mart, are not struggling with the tight business restrictions. However, since the NFL commercial, owner Mary Ruthless has experienced a flood of orders.
”In the first night alone I got months of orders!” says Ruthless. Two new workers have been hired to help with the overwhelming workload. It is amazing to see that Foggy Pine has finally gotten recognized after all these years.
