The Watauga Men’s Lacrosse Team at Watauga has a long history with many ups and downs under its belt. Its players are devoted to the game, and many of them have been playing for years. Dury Womack is one of these players. For the 2022-23 season, Dury was selected as one of the Watauga Men’s Lacrosse Team’s captains.
“I think it’s probably experience. I was one of the only people on the team who had played lacrosse before my freshman year,” Dury offered as a reason he was selected as a captain. “The other captains and I have been playing lacrosse for a very long time. Most of us started in middle school.”
Some of the lacrosse team’s best players graduated last year, but they got plenty of recruits from all grades as excitement around the season grew.
“We have seventeen returning players this year, and the rest are all newcomers,” Womack said. “They’re all showing some serious hustle, and I can tell they’re already an important part of the team. I’m looking forward to seeing what they bring to the table this season and next year.”
The team aspect is important to lacrosse, and Womack described how the team manages to stay so cooperative.
“It’s all love,” he said. “We all love each other. We care about each other, and we push each other to do our best.”
The actual lacrosse training has also increased in rigor.
“We stepped it up, man. We did preseason practices earlier this year,” Womack explained. “Most of the team went to lacrosse camps over the summer. We’ve been going out on weekends to play, just whatever we can do to get as much practice in as we can.”
As for the future, Womack has some inspiring aspirations.
“Normal lacrosse seasons will last for a couple of months, and in terms of wins, I think our games are going to be a lot closer," said Womack. "And I think they’re very exciting to watch. We’ve already broken the bad streak with our Patton game.”
Since our interview, the lacrosse team has had multiple victories, even placing third in their tournament game.
