DECA Districts: What is it all about?

Club officers Lucas McIver, Sophia Bateman, Hanes Heistand, Maggie Barnes, and Dani Lamoreaux take a selfie with the DECA members.

DECA's Districts competition is coming up on Tuesday, November 29. The one-day annual event will be held for many DECA members that have signed up to compete against other schools in marketing related topics. The competition will be held in Shelby, North Carolina.

It is no secret that many DECA members have been preparing for this competition, the question is, how? All members must take a practice test before competing in the real thing. Members also partake in practice role plays, which help with comfortability for competitions.

¨Students partake in testing and role plays. Before a competition, students complete practice tests and practice role plays,” said Olivia Tarnowski, the advisor of the DECA club and marketing teacher. “Students are required to take a 100-question test that relates to the event they choose to compete in. Students also complete a role play which requires them to come up with creative solutions to a real-world scenario.”

The main purpose of the district competition is to help members prepare for another competition coming up later next year called States. Members that want to attend States must attend the District Competition first.

¨The purpose of our District Competition is to help prepare students for our State Competition," said Tarnowski. "Any WHS DECA member who wants to compete at the state level has to attend our District Competition first. Our District Competition has a few hundred competitors compared to around 4000 competitors at our State Competition.¨

This year, DECA has had a larger number of students attending Districts this year compared to last year.

¨WHS DECA is taking 90 members to our District Competition this year compared to 65 last year," said Tarnowski. "I believe more students are more comfortable getting involved with extracurriculars this year than last year."

In April, DECA students may also compete in an international competition. To qualify for this competition, students have to place in the top 5 in the state's competition.

DECA members are excited to compete in Districts this year, with many ready to compete for a place at districts.

¨I am very excited to be able to compete in a competition this year and can't wait to make memories of competing and spending time with friends, ¨ said sophomore Natalie Fitch, a member of DECA.
