In September of 2013, Rockstar Games’s fifth installment of the Grand Theft Auto franchise was released on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. On the night of release there were massive lines marching to enter almost every video game store or seller in the nation. It was clear that GTA 5 was a game like no other. Just after the game's release it soared in popularity. Basically every teen on the planet was playing this game. Grand Theft Auto soon became the most profitable video game to ever be released.
Players were content for many years, and when GTA’s standard single player mode became stale Rockstar Games moved to consistently updating the Grand Theft Auto Online mode where players can form groups and perform heists and many other crimes together. Soon enough, GTA Online became the new big thing for GTA with constant updates to keep players logging on. But just like every other game, it has also grown stale. And as GTA Online gets older, players are left wondering: Where is Grand Theft Auto 6?
For years, fans and players went without any news, just hoping that Rockstar Games had something up their sleeve. After Rockstar released Red Dead Redemption 2 in 2018, some fans hoped an announcement for GTA 6 would come soon while other fans figured this meant they had been working on a new Grand Theft Auto game. The future would seem grim for GTA as more and more updates for GTA online would be released with no announcement for another story-based sequel.
It would remain this way until just last month. On September 18th, 2022, a 17-year old boy from the United Kingdom breached the security of Rockstar Games and gained access to source code material for a new Grand Theft Auto project. When the leaks were published, hours of footage were spread all across the internet. Fans rallied together to share their excitement.
While the leaks may seem like good news for GTA 6 as there is progress being made, there are major issues that could arise with a leak of this scale. Issues occur when a leaker or hacker gains access to the code of a project like this and they can publish the source code and allow the public to use it and exploit it. This could force Rockstar Games to manually rewrite all of their original code to make up for their loss. If this happens, there could be a massive or possibly an indefinite delay, but given the time that has passed since the leak, it seems unlikely that any delay would come from this.
After this massive surge of news, it's important that we take a step back and look at what's right in front of us. I collected answers form various students from around WHS and the results were rather surprising. Learning that only about 59% of students have played a GTA game was shocking given the immense popularity of the franchise, and only about 27% are really excited for the release of GTA 6.
Grand Theft Auto is one of largest video game franchises of all time and for 9 years there had been nearly nothing after the release of GTA 5. One UK boy changed all of that, and now the hype is more alive than ever. There is no doubt that this game's release will be monumental.
