Watauga volleyball team celebrating Caroline Farthings 1000th kill.
In volleyball, a kill is when a teammate spikes a volleyball onto the opponent's side and it is unreturnable. Caroline Farthing is a Watauga High School senior who, after four years of playing for the Varsity Volleyball Team, reached a milestone of 1000 kills on October 3rd.
Farthing discovered her passion early. She started playing volleyball in the 2nd grade and has never stopped.
“Usually you don’t start playing volleyball until you're twelve but I was able to play because my mom was the coach of the team,” said Farthing.
She was also lucky enough to have sisters to look up to.
”I have three sisters and two of them went on to play Division One college volleyball, so at a young age I got to experience what it looks like to be a college athlete,” Farthing said.
Farthing has been able to play a few different positions over the years such as sixth rotation outside spot primarily meaning the athlete hits on the outside but she will also rotate, and middle back which is a position on the back row in the middle. For college Caroline will strictly be on the back row.
“When I first started playing volleyball, I played on the back row just because I was so small,” she said. “I also set at one point.”
Farthing also took part in different teams, including a traveling team, but Watauga has been her overall favorite.
“We are so close,” she said. “We all grew up together and when you’ve played with the same people your whole life, your chemistry is just a lot better.”
Ever since Farthing was a freshman, her kills have been tracked until the big moment where she finally reached her 1000th kill.
“I actually had no idea at that moment,” Farthing said. “I knew my coach was keeping up with my stats and I knew I was close last year, so it was a huge shock.”
Of course, while she was excelling through her volleyball career, there were a few obstacles in her way. Farthing unfortunately had an ankle injury half way through the season last year.
“It was hard to bounce back,” she said. “I wasn’t as fast and I couldn't jump as high. That whole season was really degrading because I thought I wasn’t good enough.”
But Farthing overcame that obstacle and bounced back to her regular self. She will be attending Appalachian State University.
”I committed the first week of my junior year," she said.
She will continue to excel in volleyball in the back row position for the App State Volleyball Team.
