There are lots of phenomenal and foolproof places to eat breakfast in Boone. However, most options are predominantly fast food. In order to add some variation, we decided to try two different, slightly elevated breakfast options: Betty’s Biscuits and Vicious Biscuit. Betty’s Biscuit is located on King Street beside Mast General Store, and Vicious Biscuit is on Blowing Rock Road beside Palm Berries.

I went to Vicious Biscuit and ordered a “Gravy Train” biscuit. The menu describes it as “One buttermilk biscuit smothered in maple sausage gravy, chive garnish.” I ordered one, and it was priced at $8.00. That was one of the most affordable things on the menu. That said, I thought the biscuit was really fluffy, and the gravy was clearly Southern-style. It was thick, but it was not overly spicy. I would argue the maple flavor was there, however it wan’t present in every bite.

The bustling atmosphere had a city-like feel to it. The line to order was long, and I felt rushed once I made it to the register. Once I had paid, there wasn’t a place to stand and wait for my order. It seemed as though I was obstructing the servers and other customers. I liked the food, but it’s not the most inviting environment. If I were to go back, I would order takeout instead.

I went to Betty’s Biscuits and ordered their “classic” biscuit and gravy. Growing up in the South, I am used to eating the traditional white gravy, similar to the gravy at Vicious Biscuit. The sausage gravy at Betty’s was a much thinner consistency, with a kick to the flavor. Made with more spices, this gravy had an untraditional taste. Paired with the gravy, was a golden brown, fluffy biscuit that was perfectly crispy on the outside. It was decadent and incredibly tasty. My total came to nearly $10.00. Although it was more expensive, Betty’s Biscuits provided a non-traditional taste to your typical biscuits and gravy.

The atmosphere felt like a quaint, hole-in-the-wall style restaurant. The servers were polite, and my order was ready within 10 minutes. Despite the slightly inflated price, Betty’s Biscuits was an enjoyable space and I would most definitely return.
