Artist of the Week: Ada Tzotschew

Ada Tzotschew, a talented sophomore at Watauga High School, is our third Artist of the Week.

Tzotschew has been painting since she had the resources to do so, as it is something she is deeply passionate about. All of her pieces are incredibly detailed and show that that she has clearly put her heart into every piece. In her words, a reason she loves art is that “art is incredibly important in bringing communities together.”

When asked why she paints and draws as much as she does, Tzotschew said, “I make art because it makes me feel like I have purpose, I love to make art centering around things that I think are important because I think art has potential to change the world.”

The pieces shown above all have a special connection to Tzotschew, such as the art class tag. The assignment was to make a name tag, so Ada took inspiration from the famous contemporary artist Keith Haring. Each frame shows figures posing in the shape of her name, but the meaning behind it is much more personal to her. The figures are meant to represent her and her identical twin Ursa and the different stages between their siblinghood and friendship: how they bond, grow, and ultimately change.

She has always been interested in creating pieces for her community, like the mural piece (shown above) that she made for her elementary school Two Rivers.

“In 8th grade at Two Rivers we had service projects where we could choose what we wanted to do, and for my service project I wanted to do something with art. I wanted to create murals for different grades, so I made a mural for K-2, 3-5, and another for 7-8. These murals highlighted my experiences in their respective grades, as the one that's being presented is for Kindergarten," said Tzotschew. "It’s of two kids playing, and it sums up my kindergarten experience where I was learning to work with others and learn social skills. The reason it is set outside is because was learning about the natural world back then, like learning about frogs and toads. All in all, it is a reflection of my time in kindergarten.”

Tzotschew’s passion for the arts is visible in her dedication, intertwining service with skill in order to give back to her community.
