When winter finally rolls around in Boone, going to the ski mountain multiple times a week is a must. Appalachian Ski Mountain is a local and popular mountain where many students at Watauga High School ski and snowboard. Appalachian Ski Mountain is the perfect place to ski, whether you are a beginner or a terrain park expert.
"I've been skiing for about fifteen years. I was three years old when I first started skiing,” said senior Sophie Speckmann. "I like skiing because it's fun to go fast down the slope."
Appalachian Ski Mountain is home to thirteen ski slopes. They range in difficulty from beginner to advanced, and they also have three terrain park slopes.
"My favorite slope is Orchard Run because it's the longest slope there and it's just very chill," said freshman Avery Moretz.
Orchard Run is leveled as an intermediate slope, but if you are looking for something a little bit more challenging, Thin Slice or Hard Core might be the one for you.
"My favorite slope at App is Avery's Appal because it is fun to ride the conveyor belt, and it's named after my cousin Avery," said Speckmann. Avery's Appal is leveled at a beginner slope and is a very good slope to start on.
Although we haven't had much snow so far this winter season, Moretz and Speckmann have hopes that it will snow a lot.
"I really hope that it will snow a lot, like a good snow you know. I also hope that I don't get hurt this year because that would be bad," said Moretz.
Appalachian Ski Mountain is also well known for their Terrain Park. The park is filled with rails and boxes and the ski mountain holds various competitions throughout the year, including the Red Bull Rail Yard competition. Sophomore Garrett Bagley is a skier and competitor at some of these Appalachian Ski Mountain events.
"I started skiing when I was about four and a half years old when my mom made me go with my cousin, and I've skied ever since," said Bagley. "My favorite slope at App is AppalJam because it has two jumps and rails sometimes."
Although Bagley started skiing when he was four, his love for skiing and the terrain park has only grown.
"I like skiing because I can flip and go upside down. My favorite trick is a flat spin, it's like a weird backflip," said Bagley.
Appalachian Ski Mountain is open weekdays from 9am-10pm, Friday and Saturday from 9am-12am, and Sundays from 9am-11pm. For more information and tickets visit www.appskimtn.com.
