A Review of "Midnights," the Chart-Topping Album

Taylor Swift is a well-known artist who stepped into the music industry sixteen years ago and has not let fans down since. Stepping out of the country-feel music when her fourth studio album was released, “Red," Swift’s style of music has altered between each album.

On October 21, 2022, Taylor Swift released her long-expected tenth studio album, "Midnights."

Every emotion you are feeling, Taylor Swift has a song. Whether it is breakup feelings, revenge, happiness, sadness, or regret, you name it and Swift has it. While “Folklore” and “Evermore,” follow a fictional storyline, “Midnights” is the first autobiographical album in three years. The album has been out for a few weeks now, leaving the charts filled with her name.

Taylor Swift is the first artist to claim all top ten spots on the Billboard Hot 100. In addition, for the ninth time in her career she holds the number one spot. This number one song, “Anti-Hero,” has been in the top spot for three consecutive weeks.

Swift kept fans on edge in the weeks prior the album's release by creating a TikTok series, “Meet Me at Midnight,” where she would reveal one song title for each of the thirteen sleepless nights. The anticipation of the release was killing fans with questions. And when the day finally came, there were mixed reactions.

Following the album’s release, fans quickly showed support, but some were unhappy.

“Midnights” is Swift’s untold truth, meaning the lyrics are vulnerable and honest. The style of this album gives a little of everything: revenge, authenticity, and peace. Because of the diversity of this album, some listeners do not prefer “Midnights”.

The first listen to the album as a fan for many years was almost underwhelming. Each song was so different it was hard for many fans to understand the meaning of the album. The previous albums all had a similar vibe of songs and lyrics that seemed to connect to each other, but this one did not give the same feeling. The anticipation for Swift’s tenth studio album was making beloved fans crazy, just waiting for this album. After listening repetitively, the album began to prove itself.

“Midnights”gives a sense of truth and self-acceptance. The brutal honesty of this album creates a self-reflective and diary feel in the lyrics. The songs give listeners the ability to relate to the lyrics in whatever way they choose. However, the "3 a.m. Edition," the deluxe edition of this album, provides an even more deep and more sincere feel from Swift herself and is worth the listen.
